It's here, the moment you've been waiting for all year! Chomping at the bit as they say. The 2011 Cowboys & Indies Festive 50!
In case you're new to the show, we borrowed the idea from our icon John Peel

Show tracks for Sat. Dec. 3/11

The holidays and the annual Festive 50 are soon approaching. So what were your faves of the year so far? Drop me a line and let me know. They might just be tabulated in the show's year end countdown.

Nothing excites me more as a music fan then when your fave band releases new material. But when the band breaks up you have to wait for the elusive solo album to come out. Some artists have no problem releasing new material, others it takes a while. That is the case with the 2 new tracks I'm psyched about tonight.
Firstly, we have David Newton from everybody's fave leather clad indie rockers from the late 80s, early 90s, Mighty Lemon Drops. He's resurfaced in David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels. They have just released a new EP called Paint The Town. We feature the title track tonight. Get ready for more coming our fave Lemon Drop/Angel!
David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels- "Paint The Town"

Second up is the enchanting Kate Jackson. The former Long Blonde, not Charlie's Angel (North Americans always seem to comment on her name). It's been 3 long years since the demise of Long Blondes. Kate is back and worked with Bernard Butler on her new single Wonder Feeling. We feature the title track tonight. It's like she's only been gone a mere moment.

Show tracks for Sat. Nov. 19/11

We open up tonight's show on a sour note. Jackie Leven, the great Scottish songwriter and folk artist died this past week from a long battle with lung cancer. He was in a criminally under appreciated post punk/new wave band called Doll By Doll. They released 4 great albums in a short 3 year period between 1979-1982. We open up the show with the epic The Palace Of Love from the brilliant debut Remember.

The mysterious No Ceremony are back with another free download. Follow the link to grab it for free while you can.

Show tracks for Sat. Nov. 12/11

Another show, another dollar! Thank you to all the people who called during our pledge drive last week. The show raised at least $405 for CJAM this year. It may be more because we the djs don't see the online pledges. All of CJAM thanks you for your support this year.

With the special show last week some new releases were put back until this show. Loads of new tracks and it will probably be the same next week. Hope you enjoy them. And don't forget you can always request a song anytime. Just make a comment/message here or at cowboysandindies@hotmail.com

Show tracks for Sat. Oct. 29/11

We're back for 1 week really. Well, next week is the Pledge Drive show. So we go from a week off to special programming for the Pledge Drive. So this year the musical portions of the show will be the best of the year so far. Sort of a Festive 50 preview show.

CJAM 99.1FM Pledge Drive time again

Hello friends!

Well it's that time of the year again. Halloween is in the air, the leaves are changing colour and CJAM hits the airwaves for your support. Yes it is time for the annual Pledge Drive. The one time a year that CJAM members ask their families, friends and of course loyal listeners to help support another year of quality alternative programming.

The on-air part of the Pledge Drive starts on Friday, November 4th at noon and runs for one week until Friday, November 11 at noon. This is the what's called the pre-pledge portion, where the volunteers hit up their families and friends for their support. You know I have been the host of Cowboys & Indies, a British indie and alternative show for over 20 years now. It is more important than ever in hard economic times for us to find sources of revenue to keep CJAM functioning 24/7/365. CJAM is a non-profit volunteer led organization. We provide alternatives to the mainstream/commercial radio and news world that is far to prevalent today. From non-mainstream news to ethnic programming representing many different cultures to voices for marginalized people from different backgrounds and of course music that challenges and entertains.

All I am asking you at this time is to make a pledge promise. Just simply send me an message with your address and details and pledge amount. I will do the rest. I will then email you with instructions on how to fulfill your pledge in a couple weeks. No amount is to small. What matters is CJAM staying on air for another year.

OR

You can pay online at the CJAM website (www.cjam.ca) if you want to pay by credit card or Paypal. Fear not all is secure and your details are and will not be sold to outside parties. Just simply follow the easy instructions. Just drop me a quick message if you choose this method so I can thank you personally.

Thanks for the support,
Marc Cazabon

Show tracks for Sat. Oct. 22/11

As you heard (or about to hear if you download the show), there was a special guest host last night for Cowboys & Indies. Martin Deck, host of CJAM's Wake The Town, graciously agreed to fill in for me last night as I was down at the Colosseum to see Duran Duran. His post punk retrospective was a treat for the ears. Loyal listeners will be familiar with some tracks and hopefully others will be new discoveries. Martin forwarded me the track list so you can check it out. A big thank you to Martin for hosting the show last night!

Remember that the Pledge Drive is coming soon. More info will be provided on this weeks show. I hope you can support us in the 2011 Annual CJAM Pledge Drive.

Show tracks for Sat. Oct. 15/11

We're coming up on that time of year again, pledge drive time. The first week of November will be the annual CJAM FM Pledge Drive. This year the theme is Staying Alive...yes I know it's an awful disco song, the sentiment rings true. We need your help to keep broadcasting in the Windsor/Detroit area. You'll be hearing more in coming days/weeks. Stay tuned for the info. Drop me a line here if you would like to donate to CJAM FM and I will help you out.

Just a quick reminder that there will be a guest host for Cowboys & Indies nest Saturday night. Martin Deck, the host of Wake The Town (also on CJAM FM) was kind enough to fill in so I could go see Duran Duran at the Coliseum here in Windsor. He has hinted that he will be featuring a post-punk spotlight. Enjoy the change of pace and I will see in 2 weeks.

Show tracks for Sat. Oct. 8/11

I really miss going to the record store and buying the latest releases. I'm not trying to offend any of the local record stores that I frequent but the selection of British bands in this city is really pitiful. I know that I'm really impatient and can't (or won't) wait for releases to be ordered because I need them right away for the show. But having to wait sometimes weeks for domestic releases drives me loopy. I don't like ordering off the interwebs. I guess I'm old skool and want to hold the new releases and go right home and play them. Playing some older artists tonight made me reminisce I guess...lol

Show tracks for Sat. Sept. 24/11

Another lp session night. We did this earlier in the year when a bunch of great albums came out all at once. They're all good and would have been proper lp sessions in their own right. So there is one proper lp session and 4 mini ones.

It might be an end of an era. The Manic Street Preachers appear to be headed for a hiatus. But the rumours are swirling after the announcement of a definitive singles compilation and a retrospective video for the new single This Is The Day, that the hiatus may be permanent. Show tracks for Sat. Sept. 17/11

Opened the show with a really innovative track. Ash and We Are Scientists have covered a track by Robert Manning called Washington Parks. What's so innovative about it it that Ash are playing in the left channel and We Are Scientists are in the right channel. You can hear differences if you use headphones. It's all for charity. Please link to Robert's site to purchase tracks and help his cause.

Show tracks for Sat. Aug. 13/11

"Oh my god, what a fucking nightmare!"
To borrow a line from the lovely Marisa Tomei in the brilliant My Cousin Vinny.
Last night was just that a nightmare. CJAM installed a new logging system for us djs. I knew it was going to be a handful for the first couple times but I had no idea how time consuming it was going to be. I spent more time looking at a computer monitor than I did the cd players and it showed. Mistake after mistake. Please don't download this show....lol It got better by the end of the show. So hopefully next week will back to normal. If you managed to stay the whole show you deserve a medal for perseverance....lol

Show tracks for Sat. July 23/11

What an insane week. So much news to cover.
First and sadly, the news of Amy Winehouse's death came out as I prepared for this show. The news came out of left field and was shocking to say the least. Say what you will of Amy and her demons but she was a great talent and will be missed.
We open the show with a couple of Amy's great performances.

Of course, much will be said of the fact that she was 27 with references to The 27 Club. There were 2 other tragic deaths of modern British musicians at 27. Pete de Freitas (Echo & the Bunnymen) and Richey James Edwards (Manic Street Preachers). Ok before you get all riled up (and believe me some already have) Richey is missing and presumed dead. And he does appear on many lists of performers dying to young.
So we play Echo & The Manics as well.

The 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize shortlist was announced Tuesday. Tonight we run down the list and play a track from each nominated album. Some are regulars to the show and some aren't. This might be the first time in 20+ years that a regular jazz track has been featured on the show.
Who are you picking to win? I'd say Adele but with the committees habit of picking albums from the fringes who knows. She may be too popular. My heart is rooting for Everything Everything or James Blake.

CowboysAndIndie

Well, that was interesting...lol Get a week off and all hell breaks lose on the first week back...lol
Since we were off last week, we open with a quick tribute to the genius of Gil Scott-Heron.
We're losing too many great ones, in all genres.

Please follow the link above to buy my version of the new Kaiser Chiefs album. It's really good, I promise!

Remember, if you want to download the last half hour of the show you have to go to the Sunday archives and download
it separately. The technicians are hard at work to make it all one download soon. I'll try to add it to the download feature here on this page but you may have to do it from cjam.ca

Show tracks for Sat. May 21/11

Tonight's show had a special bonus feature - an extra half hour! So if you want to hear that half hour in the archives you have to go to the next show, Planet Funk, and download that to hear it.

Well, since the rapture kinda crapped out (which most of us with a toe in reality expected) we open the show with a track "With Each New Day" from About Group. I toyed with doing a theme show, but surprisingly there just aren't a lot of Brit Indie songs about the apocalypse!....lol

Quick update, we will be pre-empted next week for special Detroit Electronic Music Fest programming. Not a surprise, I did see that coming really. But still disappointed that I won't be able to bring a show next week.
But upon our return the week after, that extra half hour will become permanent. We hope to have the archives sorted by then so that downloading the show will be easy for everyone concerned. So remember starting in June Cowboys & Indies will air from 10pm-12:30am.

Rewind! show tracks for Sat. Apr. 30/11

As always the Rewind! shows are so much fun to do. So much great music to feature and so little time. We almost always run out of time and we did again last night. We got some top notch tracks in for your enjoyment.
Unfortunately, we open the show with the news that Poly Styrene (Marianne Joan Elliott-Said) lead singer of X-Ray Spex and solo artist in her own right passed away this week from cancer. So we open the show in her honour with her very first solo single and a track from X-Ray Spex. RIP Poly, you will be missed.
