Up The Hill And Down The Slope! Show tracks for Sat. Dec. 7/13

Of course, the main news of the week was Nelson Mandela passing away at age 95. A hero to most including musicians, many of whom wrote songs about him and his life struggles for peace and equality for all. We open the show in honour of his memory with 2 songs written during his time in jail in South Africa. One may be the ultimate "struggle song" by Special AKA. The other, by Simple Minds, was written for his 70th birthday celebration and is in my opinion one of the most beautiful songs musically that they wrote. RIP Nelson Mandela

All Tomorrow's Parties! Pledge Drive show tracks for Sat. Nov. 2/13

Another one bites the dust as they say. The pledge drive show is in the can for another year. Thanks to Clara for sitting in with me. Clara rocks and she made the time fly by. I hope she enjoyed the show. Thanks to Sarah for helping on those busy pledge phone lines. Most importantly thanks to Andrew, Sharon, Adrian and Roger for their generous donation to the cause. Also, to everyone who may have pledged online, I don't have your names or I would have mentioned you as well.
There is still plenty of time to pledge. Surfing on into the station's website you can pay by credit card through Paypal. Use this link here; Pledge 2013! Or tune into any of the fine programming still to come thus week.

We took care of a little business in opening the show. Featuring James Blake from his 2013 Mercury Prize winning album Overgrown. Then we got into the musical theme for this year's pledge drive show which was the music of Lou Reed & The Velvet Underground. Done in the British indie/alternative style by featuring cover versions of some of your fave VU tracks by your fave British artists.
A little less music featured because of the increased voice time on air. But I think we managed to hit all the best tracks.
Back to regular business next week with 2 weeks worth of new releases.

Live At The Witch Trials! Show tracks for Sat. Oct. 26/13

Tonight's show was a fortunate accident. During the week while putting the show together I noticed that some of the new releases had some loose Halloween themes to them. So I figured what the hell, a Halloween show. I wasn't going to bother since it was so far into next week. But I took notice of the happy coincidences and obliged. Outside of a couple new releases, a LP Session and the opening set featuring tracks from my trip to Toronto this week, all tracks had a Halloween theme.
The show opened with some Simple Minds and Bowie tracks who I saw in Toronto this week. Simple Minds played at Massey Hall on Tuesday night and were really great despite not playing Up On The Catwalk, which annoyed a friend of mine. They played the song I opened the show with which according to another friend who has seen them 20 times said he has never seen them play it live. So I didn't mind the Catwalk omission.
The David Bowie Is exhibit at the AGO was quite good. Some really interesting pieces that would pique the interest of even a marginal Bowie fan. If you get the chance to catch in the next month before it closes do yourself a favour. It's well worth the investment of time and money. Maybe I'll get lucky and catch it again before the end of November.
Next week's show will be the Live Pledge Drive 2013 show. I hope you can listen live and call in with a donation for your favourite campus/community station CJAM 99.1FM! If not please use this link to donate safely and securely online anytime. Donate to CJAM!

Rock 'N' Roll Will Break Your Heart! Show tracks for Sat. Oct. 19/13

For the last few weeks I've been letting the music do the talking. But it's that time of year, pledge drive time. One week every year the volunteers hit he airwaves and ask for the listeners financial support. This is the 30th anniversary of CJAM hitting the FM airwaves. The plans for another power increase are taking shape. But that takes a huge amount of money. That's where the listeners come in. Dig deep and support your local campus/community radio station. Every amount helps, whether you can afford a large donation or a small one. It all goes to same cause keeping CJAM your home of non-commercial music and spoken word programming. It all starts on November 1st, with this shows pledge drive episode airing on November 2nd. But you don't have to wait until then to donate. Go to www.cjam.ca right now to donate safely and discreetly via Paypal. Tell them Cowboys & Indies sent you. CJAM thanks you for your support.

The Day The World Turned Day-glo! Show tracks for Sat. Sept. 14/13

So the big news of the week was the Mercury Music Prize shortlist announcement. As has been the custom in the last bunch of years we profile the artists that were nominated. Actually, all but 2 of them have been played on the show before. Days after the announcement the controversy started with My Bloody Valentine feeling "banned" from the proceedings. It turns out their album was far too independent and they didn't meet the minimum requirements to be considered. I wonder if this will be the spark to change the requirements to allow more independent artists/albums.
We lead into the profile of all 12 nominated artists with last year's winner.
As if that wasn't enough there was still time for new music from Wedding Present, Comet Gain, Summer Camp and Manic Street Preachers in the LP Session.

After hearing the tragic news of Jon Brookes death this past week I decided to feature the music of The Charlatans tonight. Queen Of The Scene! Show tracks for Sat. July 20/13

"The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry." So the plan last night was to go see OMD at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit. To accomplish that Clara from The Washing Machine here on CJAM graciously agreed to guest host the show. The stars were aligning, or so I thought. The bastard weather here didn't just make my week a living hell but also ruined my weekend plans. Malcolm, the drummer, in OMD succumbed to heat exhaustion in Toronto the night before resulting in a hospital stay. Which then resulted in the cancellation of the rest of the tour. Obviously, we all hope Malcolm makes a speedy and total recovery. The news on OMD's website is saying just that. But disappointment doesn't begin to describe the feelings as you watch months of waiting for the show go up in smoke. There was no point in trying to get to the show, unprepared, and ruining all the hard work Clara had done all week to prep for it. Clara, the queen of the scene, had a blast hosting and I hope you enjoyed listening. Big thanks to Clara & Chris for a great show!

Next week there will be a special guest host on Cowboys & Indies, as I will getting my 80s dance on at OMD. Swing Out Sisters & Brothers! Show tracks fo Sat. July 6/13

Swing Out Sister made a rare appearance in Detroit this week on Wednesday at Chene Park, Detroit. One of the classiest bands and front ladies around wooed the crowd with hits and more! Such a great night. Hope they return much sooner than later. So we celebrate the great show with a few tracks from various albums that were featured live.
The show almost didn't happen. This computer wasn't being forthcoming with some of the music for tonight's show. After some sweet talking and a few hits with a hammer...lol...catastrophe was averted and the music flowed. That's the thing as more music becomes reliant on machines, the greater chance of problems. Am I being a little too old school again? lol

Disco Tryst! Show tracks for Sat. June 8/13

Occasionally the show will take on a totally different direction than I originally planned or thought. Tonight was one of those shows. Technical difficulties prevented me from playing several tracks that I intended. The result was a second half of the show that was done on the fly. Guerilla djing if you will. It all turned out OK in the end. There's always next week to play the stuff that got left out tonight. I still got lots of great new material in for you. New material from Hot Chip, White Lies, Editors, Disclosure, Fuck Buttons, Loom, Gaz Coombes and Chapel Club in the LP Session.

Spread Your Love! Show tracks for Sat. May 11/13

Argh! I sees spots! Thousands of spots! BRMC sure do love strobe lights. Like a million little flash bulbs going off over and over. Not as much smoke as I thought there would be though. Great show last night at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit. They opened with a cover of The Call's Let The Day Begin. Touched on all the hits. Always a fave to see live.

Tonight we featured Primal Scream's album of the year contender in the LP Session. Also tonight new music from Noah & The Whale, Editors, Little Boots, Pigeon Detectives and another Damon Albarn production. Finally made time to get Parlour Flames on.
