Show tracks for Sat. July 24/10

With the 2010 Mercury Prize shortlist being announced this week, we take a look at almost all of the finalists. Not bad, 11 of 12 finalists have been played on this show. But, there are some glaring omissions from the list.
This prize has been under scrutiny for years for some of their shortlist finalists and winners. Consider that Blur, Oasis, Verve & Radiohead all have been nominated but never won. They are responsible for some of the most influential albums of the last 15 years, not to mention sales numbers. In fact, Damon Albarn has become so disillusioned with the prize that he has withdrawn one of his albums (Gorillaz debut) and not allowed any other of his albums to be even nominated.
This year is no different. My question is where is the electronic album? That must be The XX nod. After all they did nominate 3 indie-folk albums instead of a traditional folk album.
With that, the blogosphere is alight with the omissions of their favourite albums. So in that spirit here's the albums I think they overlooked;

We Have Band - WHB (perfect electronic representative)
These New Puritans - Hidden (maybe the title confused the judges..lol)
Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History (just because I love it)
Lonelady - Nerve Up (sorry Laura M. but a more deserving album)
Nedry - Condors (inventive, fusing indie and dubstep to perfection)

With that field of finalists, I think The XX are shoe-ins. But they have gone leftfield for a winner in multiple previous years, so who knows.
Who's your pic or what albums do you think they missed. Post them I'd love to see them.

Next week will be another installment of Rewind! I'm thinking lots of 80s and 90s new wave and indie bands this time around. What do you think?
Then stick around for a special guest host on Earwax at midnight, ME!
Alex has a previous engagement so he asked me to bring my unique choices and share them with you. There will be lots of stuff I don't get to play on a British themed show.
So tune in next Saturday night for both shows.

Show tracks for Sat. July 17/10

We're in a "New Yorkshire State Of Mind" tonight, actually a Yorkshire State Of Mind, Leeds to be exact. Leeds bands are near and dear to our hearts here at Cowboys & Indies. Played quite a few Leeds bands tonight, some on purpose and some by accident. Maybe a future Rewind! show should be Leeds based. Hmmmm that's an idea, could easily do Manchester & Liverpool too.
There will be a Rewind! coming soon (just a regular one, no theme yet), so stay tuned for details.

Show tracks for Sat. July 3/10

Sad news to start;
The creator of the man with the biggest head in showbusiness, Frank Sidebottom, has died.
Sidebottom was the bulbous-headed alter-ego of comedian and musician Chris Sievey,
who eclipsed the fame of his creator. Sievey, 54, died June 21 after
collapsing at his home in Hale, Greater Manchester, where he was recovering from
surgery for a tumour on his chest.
In honour, we open with two tracks, one from his first band and one from his alter ego.

Also, we have two sets to celebrate the independence holidays of Canada and the US this weekend.
