The first show of new material for the New Year! I hope you enjoyed the Festive 50 countdown for 2011 during the last 2 week's shows. 2012 kicks off with loads of quality new tracks!
So we start looking at some of the bands to watch for 2012 as most of the print publications, websites and blogs are all going on about. I took a quick look at a few pages/articles/blogs and found Cowboys & Indies has already featured 15 of the bands to watch for this year during 2011. Talk about a finger on the pulse!

So excited to see a couple new releases in particular this week.
Firstly, Rose Elinor Dougall is back with a new free downloadable EP.
The Distractions Ep by Rose Elinor Dougall
It features 3 demo songs recorded shortly after the release of her 2010 debut. She has stressed that these tracks are not indicative of the material she is currently working on for her 2nd album.

The second release features more solo material from former Long Blondes members. Both come via the same release, a split cassette single featuring Former Lover & Nature Set. Former Lover being the first new music from Dorian Cox and Nature Set featuring Reenie playing bass and singing. A must for all Long Blondes fans and just 6 really great tracks period.

Well, that's the 2011 Cowboys & Indies Festive 50 Countdown completed. I hope you enjoyed the big countdown shows. There was really no doubt who #1 was going to be as they were the most requested band of the year. Congrats to The Horrors for being the 2011 Festive 50 #1!
We started the show where we left off last week at #26 for a little reminder and picked up the proceedings right away.

Nothing excites me more as a music fan then when your fave band releases new material. But when the band breaks up you have to wait for the elusive solo album to come out. Some artists have no problem releasing new material, others it takes a while. That is the case with the 2 new tracks I'm psyched about tonight.
Firstly, we have David Newton from everybody's fave leather clad indie rockers from the late 80s, early 90s, Mighty Lemon Drops. He's resurfaced in David Newton & Thee Mighty Angels. We open up tonight's show on a sour note. Jackie Leven, the great Scottish songwriter and folk artist died this past week from a long battle with lung cancer. He was in a criminally under appreciated post punk/new wave band called Doll By Doll. They released 4 great albums in a short 3 year period between 1979-1982. We open up the show with the epic The Palace Of Love from the brilliant debut Remember.

CJAM 99.1FM Pledge Drive time again

Hello friends!

Well it's that time of the year again. Halloween is in the air, the leaves are changing colour and CJAM hits the airwaves for your support. Yes it is time for the annual Pledge Drive. The one time a year that CJAM members ask their families, friends and of course loyal listeners to help support another year of quality alternative programming.

The on-air part of the Pledge Drive starts on Friday, November 4th at noon and runs for one week until Friday, November 11 at noon. This is the what's called the pre-pledge portion, where the volunteers hit up their families and friends for their support. You know I have been the host of Cowboys & Indies, a British indie and alternative show for over 20 years now. It is more important than ever in hard economic times for us to find sources of revenue to keep CJAM functioning 24/7/365. CJAM is a non-profit volunteer led organization. We provide alternatives to the mainstream/commercial radio and news world that is far to prevalent today. From non-mainstream news to ethnic programming representing many different cultures to voices for marginalized people from different backgrounds and of course music that challenges and entertains.

All I am asking you at this time is to make a pledge promise. Just simply send me an message with your address and details and pledge amount. I will do the rest. I will then email you with instructions on how to fulfill your pledge in a couple weeks. No amount is to small. What matters is CJAM staying on air for another year.

It might be an end of an era. The Manic Street Preachers appear to be headed for a hiatus. But the rumours are swirling after the announcement of a definitive singles compilation and a retrospective video for the new single This Is The Day, that the hiatus may be permanent. Last night was just that a nightmare. CJAM installed a new logging system for us djs. I knew it was going to be a handful for the first couple times but I had no idea how time consuming it was going to be. What an insane week. So much news to cover.
First and sadly, the news of Amy Winehouse's death came out as I prepared for this show. The news came out of left field and was shocking to say the least. Say what you will of Amy and her demons but she was a great talent and will be missed.
We open the show with a couple of Amy's great performances.

Of course, much will be said of the fact that she was 27 with references to The 27 Club. There were 2 other tragic deaths of modern British musicians at 27. Pete de Freitas (Echo & the Bunnymen) and Richey James Edwards (Manic Street Preachers). Ok before you get all riled up (and believe me some already have) Richey is missing and presumed dead. And he does appear on many lists of performers dying to young.
So we play Echo & The Manics as well.

The 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize shortlist was announced Tuesday. Tonight we run down the list and play a track from each nominated album. Some are regulars to the show and some aren't. This might be the first time in 20+ years that a regular jazz track has been featured on the show.
Who are you picking to win? I'd say Adele but with the committees habit of picking albums from the fringes who knows. She may be too popular. My heart is rooting for Everything Everything or James Blake.

Well, since the rapture kinda crapped out (which most of us with a toe in reality expected) we open the show with a track "With Each New Day" from About Group. I toyed with doing a theme show, but surprisingly there just aren't a lot of Brit Indie songs about the apocalypse!....lol

Quick update, we will be pre-empted next week for special Detroit Electronic Music Fest programming. Not a surprise, I did see that coming really. But still disappointed that I won't be able to bring a show next week.

I was thinking, let's do another Rewind! soon. So how 2 weeks sound for you? Yep Sat. Apr. 30 will be another Rewind! for your dose of music from yesteryear.

Another Record Store Day in the books. Being a fan of British indie/alternative music it doesn't mean that much being here in Canada. No stores, at least here in Windsor, carry or can even get the good releases. The View's official anthem "I Need That Record" was nowhere to be found.
Maybe it's the cynic in me but I'm starting to wonder how this is a day for the fans when the releases are so bloody hard to find. I know it's mainly because I'm in a small market in Canada, but still it would have been nice to get my hands on some of the releases like The View and Arctic Monkeys. Thanks to Dr Disc I was able to get the double 7" from British Sea Power.
But thanks to some friends I was able to feature them on the show. The wonders of modern technology save the day again.

The streak is in tact! Whenever I attend the Jammy ceremony we lose and when I don't we win...lol Well I attended this year and we lost. Congrats to all the Jammy winners especially Tom Fleming of The Freedom Principle for his Lifetime Achievement Jammy. It was overdue and well deserved. Congrats Tom!

It's so exciting to find a band that you end up just loving. Frankly, it's why I have been doing the show for so long. It's exciting finding new bands and being able to bring them to you. Even if I wasn't doing the show I would still be excited about a new band I played for the first time tonight. So you'll most likely be hearing from Help Stamp Out Loneliness quite a bit over the next little while. Don't worry I won't wear them out.

I love being blown away at a concert. OMD were absolutely brilliant last night at The Crofoot Ballroom. They looked great (I want to say for their age but I realize that I'm not that far behind them...lol)and more importantly sounded even better. Played most of my faves, they strayed from the more experimental early sound and stuck with the hits primarily. That's the third amazing show this year Tears For Fears, UB40 and now OMD. Let's hope the shows continue through the summer!
Tonight we feature the last tribute for Int'l Women's Day, this time the Brit girls groups. The set included 6 of my faves.

The pledge drive at CJAM for 2010 is underway. It's the one time a year that we ask you, the listener, to support the daily quality programming here at CJAM 99.1 FM.I hope you will call me during my show, Cowboys & Indies (tomorrow), Saturday between 10pm - midnight and make a pledge. The show will be live as usual and in the Rewind! style.

This year’s theme is: Watt’s Up? The Rally for Reach! Some background info: In 2009, CJAM changed its frequency to 99.1 FM This altered the broadcasting range of our listening audience. While we’ve gained new supporters, we’ve also lost the ability to broadcast in areas that are home to long time listeners. A power increase from our present 500 watts to 1,000 watts, will allow us to reconnect with these listeners while expanding the reach of our broadcast areas. Our fund-raising target for 2010 is $25,000. This will help us begin the application process to the C.R.T.C. and Industry Canada while helping to pay for the necessary technical expertise and equipment required for this power increase.

Some business first. The 2010 CJAM Pledge Drive is two weeks away. CJAM needs your assistance (your donations) once a year to help cover the cost of big expense items. This year the goal is to double our broadcast wattage. That will help CJAM reach more people in the Windsor/Detroit area. So make sure you support CJAM during any one of it's fine programs. Remember no amount is insignificant. If everyone who thought this donated just $5 we would hit our goal in the matter of days.

UB40 played Caesar's Coliseum here on Thursday. They were fantastic. So good I'm disappointed that they only played 1 1/2 hours. I could have gone for more. They featured a chunk of tracks off Signing Off, in anticipation for their UK dates. Didn't miss Ali (that's a compliment as to how they good they were) until Red Red Wine. The only track I wish was done a little better. Overall an amazing show. So as always we open the show with a track they played at the show (a favourite of mine as well).

Two hours doesn't last very long anymore. I ran out of time again. Didn't get to the Dinosaur Pile-Up lp, next week for sure. Of course, in just a matter of a couple weeks there be hardly any new material at all. That's OK because I've got some special Rewind! shows in the works for the lead-up to the holiday season. Stay tuned for those announcements.

Jeesh, what else could go wrong? lol Last week technical difficulties prevented the lp session. This week the football game ran really late causing a much shorter than show than I wanted or expected.. Ah well, such is the life in college radio.

A couple quick notes to start, there were massive technical problems at CJAM for this show. The computer network was down which affected the show. There was no lp session or saved track listing available after the show. I tried my best to reconstruct it from memory (but that's not what it used to be...lol).
I think I remembered it all (jeesh I'm getting old! lol).
In fact, at the time this was written after the show, the CJAM website was not available either. So I hope the
show will be available for download at a later time when the problems are fixed.

Tragic news from Friday as Charles Haddon, the lead singer for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, committed suicide after a festival appearance in Belgium. It is tragic when any life is taken so young, he was only 22. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
We'll pay tribute in coming weeks if/when the bands scheduled releases come out.

Slightly pre-empted for the second week in a row, this time for Phog Fest broadcasting.
But get used to this new start time. It seems the powers that be at CJAM have be'ed and they have decided to take away that half hour permanently.
So Cowboys & Indies will now officially start at 10pm and run until midnight.
Believe me I am not a happy camper about this. In fact, to say I am severely disappointed is an understatement.
But as a result of the shorter slot a few things about the show will have to be modified.
From this point on there will only be 1 lp session and it will be shorter. We will have to wait and see how this new time will affect the Festive 50. It is already a 2 episode event, if it looks like it will take 3 to do it I may have to revise it or drop it all together.
Don't panic, we'll just wait and see how this all plays out and go from there.
Cowboys & Indies will continue to be your home for the best in the British Indie/Alternative scene.
